Open Monthly Meeting

August 16, 2018 @ 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Bude & District U3A holds 10 OPEN MONTHLY MEETINGS a year with a Speaker. These are held at 2.30pm at the Parkhouse Centre, Bude on the 3rd Thursday of every month except October (our Annual General Meeting) and December (our Christmas Festivity).

The OPEN MONTHLY MEETINGS are free and include refreshments.

Visitors are welcome to come along to a meeting to see what we do and to decide whether they would like to join us.

This month’s presentation will be by Pamels Vass, and is entitled

“Breaking the Mould: Suffragettes of the West Country”

On August 4th 1913, the alarm was raised as sparks were seen above a local mansion in Lynton, North Devon. The papers were filled with speculation that suffragettes were to blame. Truth or fiction?

This one question opened a door to the fascinating story of the fight for the vote in the West Country – not a tale of a sleepy backwater but of women prepared to protest at political meetings, recruit in the streets, join mass rallies in London and suffer the agony of forced feeding in Holloway. All this … and the biggest sleepover the West Country has ever known!
