All About Birds

April 25, 2018

Today’s meeting will be a Dawn Chorus trip to Lanhydrock House, PL30 5AD.

Most members will be leaving Bude at 05:00 am from Stratton car park (if car sharing is required) to be at Lanhydrock House (PL30 5AD) by about 05.45 am, meeting in the main car park for Lanhydrock. I will leave from Holsworthy at 04.45 am.

Please let me know if you want a lift from Holsworthy – 4 people, first come, first served.

The walk at Lanhydrock is three miles through the long wood down to the River Fowey and back along the Beech Drive to the house. The walking is easy, along well established paths and quiet lanes (walking boots or stout foot wear would be advisable).

To give you a head start, if you have a Bird Song recognition CD, Phone App, or want to look on the internet, the birds we mainly hope to hear are the Black Bird, Song Thrush, Dunnock, Willow Warbler, Wood Warbler, Chiffchaff, Chaffinch, Black Cap, Great Tit, Dipper, Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail, Redpoll, Whitethroat, Redstart.   Identifying many of them by sight is usually quite difficult, as they spend most of their time flitting about the trees and hedgerows, certainly when the full canopy is out in late spring and summer, so their songs are a good way of identifying them. We are going to the woods in late April before the leaves are out to give us a fighting chance.
