April 18th Saving and Celebrating North Devon’s Maritime History Diana Yendell
Diana will tell us about the North Devon Maritime Museum starting from the history of the museum.
She will explain the necessity recognised by our founding fathers and mothers. The determined and wide-ranging plans to prove to the councils of North Devon to take on-board the aspirations and forward-thinking of the small and relatively inexperienced group. They alone initially appreciated the amazing heritage of this remote region, at a time when so much change seems to threaten the special and individual character of which many people were unaware.
The museum trust was fortunate though, that during the 60s and 70’s there was still a rich seam of material still waiting to be gleaned and with increasing prosperity. Many local people were intent upon clearing out the trappings of previous decades and supporting the initiative. To some extent the requisitions of artefacts and memoirs still continue to this day.
Diana will bring the history of the museum right up to date and disclose their plans for the new season.
