A very warm welcome to the Bude and District U3A
We are a very active group and have a wide range of activities and interests for members to choose from. Although a key aim of the U3A is to offer opportunities for extended learning, many members also enjoy the bonus of improving their social life and making new friends.
On this page you will find details of all our Study Groups with the names of those to contact should you wish to find out more or to join. There is also information about our Open Monthly Meetings, which are free to all members.
If you have any queries or questions not answered in this website do get in touch with a Committee member at one of the Open Monthly Meetings or email us.
U3A in the UK started in 1982, and there are now nearly 1000 Branches affiliated to the Third Age Trust. National membership is currently over 300,000 and increases daily so you can be proud to be part of one of the fastest growing organisations in the Country.
Study groups are relaxed and non-competitive, and can often create new friendships.
Requests for new groups are always welcome. If a group is full another can be formed.
The Third Age Trust, our National body, has an extensive library of multi-media resource material available to any U3A member.
Also, there are Summer Schools and Study Days throughout the country on a variety of subjects from jazz to modern science.
Documentation for our members can be found on these drop downs

& COFFEE MORNING
As a member you are able to attend all of our Open Monthly Meetings, which are held on the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Parkhouse Centre, Bude, starting promptly at 2.30pm. The October meeting is our Annual
General Meeting where we listen to the Chairman’s annual report, elect our new Committee etc. Please come along to cast your vote. The December meeting is our Christmas Festivity (details of this will be in our newsletter).
New members will receive a warm welcome and introduction so don’t worry about coming on your own as you will always find someone to talk to. Committee
members will be wearing badges to identify themselves and the Membership Secretary will always be available to help with any queries.
We have a full and varied speaker programme throughout the year which should appeal to all interests.
The Speaker will be followed by our notices and administrative business presented by the Chairman and then free refreshments are available.
You will be able to find out about up-coming theatre trips nand make your bookings at the Theatre Group table at the back of the hall.
A book exchange table will also be available on a ‘bring one, take one’ basis. However, if there are plenty of books, you may want to take 2 or 3!
Please try to pick up your quarterly newsletter at the
August, November, February and May meetings if you possibly can, as this will save our postage bill.
On the Information table you will find our ‘Red Book’ containing the minutes of the last 6 Committee meetings, a folder containing our newspaper articles and a Suggestion Box.
A Community Liaison table is often present, attended by
one of our long-standing members who keeps us up to date with all local information and projects.
In addition to the OMMs, a monthly Coffee Morning is
held at the Weir Café, Bude, on the first Friday of each month, from 10.30am. All members are welcome, especially new members who can find out more about the Groups that they may be interested in joining. Potential
members are also welcome and it is a friendly and informal way of finding out if the U3A is for you.
THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
A minimum 20p contribution is recommended towards the cost of refreshments each time you attend a Study Group held in a member’s own home.
When car sharing in order to attend any U3A event, the cost of mileage is normally shared amongst those in the car. This is currently 20p per mile.
Some U3A events are booked and paid for in advance (such as theatre trips, public attractions). If you book a place at one of these events please make sure to pay in advance by the required deadline.
When you join a Study Group, please do your best to attend regularly. If you do not attend 3 consecutive Group meetings your place may be offered to someone else who is keen to join.
Please note that non-members cannot normally join a Study Group (there are sometimes exceptions to make up numbers for trips). This is mainly due to our insurance cover, which applies to paid-up members only.
The U3A is for the benefit of all members and everyone is encouraged to share and join in as much as they possibly can.
Any member may join the Committee to help in administering the Bude U3A, or offer to help a Group Leader to organise a Group meeting or event.
As everyone is volunteering their time, your support will always be gratefully received!
