“The Barque John”: the fate of the emigrant sailing vessel in 1855
The year is 1855. Ellen, aged just 7 years old, was leaving North Cornwall for the epic voyage across the wide Atlantic Ocean. Annual Sunday School outings to Polzeath were her only experience of the water.
Ellen, her beloved parents and six siblings, were embarking on a wooden sailing vessel from Plymouth, for a new life in Canada.
The little maid knew nothing of the poverty her parents were experiencing. She was shielded with love, attention, sufficient food and warmth to sustain her and her adored older sisters and younger brother. Tho’ nothing in excess.
Sadly Ellen’s life was turned upside down by the excesses of someone who had scant regard for human life.
